It had never been done. Four consecutive state singles titles from 1998 to 2001. Kristina “Kiki” Stastny, playing for Joseph's Academy, was the first.
As a junior she was ranked as high as No. 2 nationally in 14s singles and doubles and top 15 in 16s and 18s singles. She won two national doubles titles, including one in 1999 with her best friend and fellow Hall of Famer Annie Menees.
At Notre Dame she was part of something special. Her freshman year, she and sophomore Sarah Jane Connelly won the decisive doubles match to give the Irish their first Big East title since 2001. She had a habit of coming through when it mattered most. Stastny is the only Irish player ever to win three-set matches in consecutive one-point Notre Dame victories. By her senior year the team had climbed to a No. 2 national ranking. She finished her college career 20-3-5 in singles and 26-1-1 in doubles and was named the Notre Dame Monogram Club Team MVP in 2006. In Kiki’s case, there was no luck of the Irish. It was all skill.
