Jerry Johnson won four consecutive state high school doubles titles from 1956 to 1959. He was just getting started.
At Washington University he compiled a 63-6 singles record and a 55-5 doubles record over four years. He captured four conference singles championships, leading the Bears to three Great Lakes Conference championships and one College Athletic Conference championship.
He went on to win St. Louis District men's singles in 1969 and 1973. He won the National Public Parks men's doubles championship more than any other St. Louisian, and he did it with four different partners.
His most enduring partnership was with Bill Heinbecker. Together they dominated men's doubles in St. Louis and well beyond, winning District doubles six times between 1962 and 1971 and the Men's Doubles Championship at the 55th ATA Nationals in 1971, held right here in St. Louis. They were inducted into the Hall of Fame together.
