Drummond Jones captained the Yale tennis team and came home to St. Louis to dominate the regional circuit, winning the Missouri Valley and Central States sectional titles in singles and doubles.
He competed at the highest levels of the American game. He qualified twice for the U.S. Nationals at Newport — the tournament now known as the U.S. Open — playing in 1910. In 1911 he reached the doubles semifinals at the U.S. Clay Courts with R.M. Hoerr.
Off the court he shaped the sport in St. Louis. He served as the first president of the St. Louis District Tennis Association and helped build the organizational foundation the local game still runs on.
The USLTA Executive Committee named the Drummond Jones Trophy in his honor, awarded for Missouri Valley inter-city competition.
