Dick Horwitz came up with the best of them. Practicing at the Armory with Buchholz and Miller made them all better. He went on to win the state high school doubles title three consecutive years, from 1953 to 1955, and was ranked fourth nationally in boys doubles with Butch Buchholz. In 1956 he reached third in Missouri Valley junior singles and was a finalist in the National Junior Indoor Championships. 

At Washington University he lost once in three years at number one singles and set a record of 25 consecutive wins. He was inducted into the Washington University Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. 

He won St. Louis District men's singles in 1959, 1961, and 1962 and the doubles four consecutive years from 1959 to 1962. He won the Midwest Open men's singles in 1959. In 1962 and again in 1977 he won the National Public Parks men's doubles with Jerry Johnson. In 1974 he won the Saks-Kodel National mixed doubles tournament, earning entry into the US Open. 

He turned pro in 1963 and won the Midwest Open Pro doubles with Larry Miller. He went on to teach tennis at Bellerive Country Club, where his students included owners, managers, and players across the St. Louis Cardinals organization. 

He was elected to four Tennis Halls of Fame, two national and two local.His sons Joe and Lou both earned college tennis scholarships, Joe to SMU, Lou to NC State. He and Justina Bricka gave them the game.
